Introduction
The genesis of the Sexaxa project is a tale of serendipity, rooted deeply in both personal connections and cultural heritage. Let's take a journey back to the origins of this captivating documentary project.
A Fateful Invitation
In December 2014, an unexpected invitation changed the course of my photographic journey. Boykanio Trust Phenyo, the granddaughter of the late chief of Sexaxa, a village in Botswana, invited me to witness a significant event. The occasion was the delivery of a minibus intended to transport village children to their school, 11 miles away. This gesture was a part of a broader initiative spearheaded by Boykanio, reflecting the community's resilience and commitment to education.

The Gift of Giving
During my visit, I witnessed the festive distribution of second-hand clothes—a heart-warming act of giving during the holiday season. These clothes were collected through a campaign organized by Boykanio's daughter - Katrinah, symbolizing the spirit of communal support and generosity that defines Sexaxa.

The Kgotla Meeting
The pinnacle of the visit was the traditional "Kgotla meeting," a revered assembly held in the village. This formal event, characterized by its strict dress code and etiquette, was an exclusive affair for village residents and their guests. As Boykanio’s appointed photographer, I was granted the rare privilege to document this culturally rich event, capturing moments of unity and celebration that are seldom seen by outsiders.

Inspiration Struck
Amid these profound experiences, the inspiration to create the Sexaxa photobook was born. It wasn't just the vibrant life or the unique traditions of the villagers that moved me, but their indomitable spirit that resonated with me the most. This photobook, developed later during my studies under the guidance of Peter Bennett at the University of West London, aimed to showcase the daily life and cultural richness of Sexaxa’s inhabitants.

A Challenge Overcome
Interestingly, the entire documentary was captured using a borrowed Canon 1000D camera with basic lenses. This challenge proved that passion and vision could overcome material limitations, resulting in a photobook that truly encapsulates the essence of Sexaxa.
Closing Thoughts
The Sexaxa project not only enhanced my skills as a documentary photographer but also deepened my appreciation for cultural narratives. If you're inspired by stories of community, resilience, and cultural richness, I invite you to explore the Sexaxa photobook.
